NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior defensive back
Jake Herzog was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection on Thursday afternoon becoming the second Captain to be honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America this year.
Earning the distinction for the second straight year, Herzog becomes just the fourth CNU football player to earn the prestigious honor more than once in his career. He joins Evan Moog (2013, 2014), David Furrow (2015, 2016), and Ben James (2019, 2020) in the exclusive group. Herzog is the 14th selection among 10 different players in program history.
Herzog will now be nominated among the rest of the first team All-District selections for CoSIDA Academic All-America plaudits. The CoSIDA Academic All-America and All-District teams are the longest-running and most prestigious academic and athletic award for student-athletes. All nominees must have a GPA of 3.30 or above and be a starter or important reserve. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, career stats were considered rather than single season participation.
This year, the veteran defensive back finished the academic calendar with a 3.77 cumulative GPA . Majoring in Criminology, Herzog was named to the New Jersey Athletic Confererence All-Academic Team in 2020.
Herzog did not compete with the Captains during their two-game season this spring, but was a formidable defender in his first season during the 2019 campaign. A starter in all 10 contests, Herzog earned second team All-State accolades alongside honorable mention All-Conference plaudits. The Springfield, Va. native led the team in interceptions, with six, and finished the year with 27 total tackles. He set the single season program record for interception return yards, with 125, which included one returned for a touchdown.
