NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Exactly one year since the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team stepped into Jennings Family Stadium for its most recent home game, the Captains will return to their cozy confines on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when the squad hosts Virginia Wesleyan in a non-conference battle.

Entering the midweek match-up, Christopher Newport currently sits at 1-1 on the season, while Virginia Wesleyan is 0-3.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a limited number of spectators will be permitted inside the facility for Wednesday's game. Director of Athletics Kyle McMullin has instituted a policy in which each player and coach will be allowed to include two fans on a designated pass list, while Christopher Newport students with a valid ID will be admitted until the limited capacity is reached. Visiting teams will not be permitted to have spectators in attendance.

The policy, which is available at the top of this release, includes a full list of guidelines for those attending the game. Please review the policy before arriving on campus.

For those unable to attend the game, Christopher Newport will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

The Captains are coming off of a 15-10 setback at Roanoke on Saturday. During that contest, Gracie Sanders collected 10 ground balls, which stands as the second-highest single-game total in program history. She fell just one shy of matching Kristyn Hankins' school record of 11 set at Lynchburg on March 15, 2005.

Along with Sanders, Cat Leighty erupted for four goals and an assist. That marked her second straight five-point effort of the season. Kelsey Winters also handed out three assists against the Maroons, while Kendall Krause added a pair of goals.

Overall this season, Winters currently ranks second in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference with eight assists, while her 11 points place her third among league competitors. Leighty is also fifth overall with 10 points. Meanwhile, Sam Wettengel is third in the league with 13 draw controls and four takeaways.

On the other side of the field, Virginia Wesleyan is in the midst of a four-game road swing to open the year. Slotted seventh in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, the Marlins feature senior goalkeeper Jordan Moilanen, who was a third-team All-League selection in 2019. So far this season, she has 44 total saves, including a 17-stop showcase in her last appearance against Marymount on Friday.

Offensively, Caroline Engle has a team-high four goals for the Marlins, while Helen Kennedy-Butler has three points, including a pair of assists. Meanwhile, Mikayla Callahan leads the way with eight draw controls, and Yaminah Lewis has six ground balls and three takeaways.

In 20 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 13-7 advantage in the series. The Captains posted a 19-3 win last year in Virginia Beach behind a seven-point explosion from Winters. Leighty also deposited four goals during that contest, while Joely Stevens established a career-high with four ground balls.

Following Wednesday's contest, Christopher Newport will remain at home for a 3 p.m. game against No. 4 Washington & Lee on Saturday.
