Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. -- Hitting the road for a non-conference matchup against regional power Washington & Lee University, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team won 6-3 on Sunday afternoon, earning the third win in the last four matches against the Generals. The Captains improved to 4-1 on the season while handing Washington & Lee their first loss, dropping to 3-1 in the early stages of 2021.
In the latest released Division III national rankings, W&L was ranked No. 32 in the nation, meaning the match victory stands as the highest ranking the Generals have held in a loss to CNU since 2008 when the Captains upended the ODAC foe by the same score, 6-3. The Captains have also earned wins in 2018 and 2019 against Washington & Lee when they were ranked regionally.
Leading the way in the impressive victory were a trio of Captains to capture wins in both singles and doubles. Senior
Scotty Hunter, junior
Ryan Macy, and sophomore
Alec Strause all went 2-0 against the Generals on Sunday. The latter pair teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles as Macy and Strause defeated Harry Kittredge and Connor Coleman. Hunter also won in doubles with an 8-6 victory over T.J. Rudden and Noah Tapp while pairing with
Matthew Dubuque.
CNU wrapped up a doubles sweep when
James Baron and
Paul Baron surrendered just a single game in an 8-1 win over James Torbert and Mac Morehead at No. 3.
Strause earned his second win of the day over Kittredge when the two matched up at No. 4 singles. The CNU second-year won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Hunter also cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alex Fedor on the top line, improving to 4-1 this year, all at No. 1. Rounding out the two-victory days was Macy, who was challenged by Coleman before capturing a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win.
In two of the three losses for Christopher Newport, the Captains battled in three-set close matches. Dubuque was mear points away from pulling out the win at No. 5 over Tapp, before suffering a 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 loss in the battle. On the No. 6 line,
Tyler Hyun won the first set but W&L's Rudden rebounded for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday, March 24 as they take on North Carolina Wesleyan College in a match that was rescheduled from last week. The action will begin at 2:00 pm.
