ASHLAND, Va. -- The 11th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will return to action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Captains travel to Randolph-Macon for a non-conference test at Day Field.
Entering the midweek match-up, Christopher Newport stands at 4-0, including 3-0 in road action. Randolph-Macon is 2-1 with a 1-0 mark at home.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Yellow Jackets are not allowing fans of visiting teams to attend their home games during the 2021 campaign. Christopher Newport is coming off its third consecutive double-digit victory after dispatching Washington (Md.), 18-4, on Saturday. During that game, freshman
Zack Sands won 13 of his 15 faceoff attempts and snatched nine ground balls while securing the Coast-to-Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week Award. He also added three points, including a pair of assists, to help round out a breakthrough performance.
In addition to Sands,
Dylan Rice notched six points, including four goals, while
Brady Altobello contributed four strikes as well. Meanwhile, the Captains also secured 44 ground balls, including four apiece by Rice,
Phoenix Hines, and
Ryan Young. That effort was the third straight game in which the squad scooped up at least 40 rollers, marking the longest stretch since 2018.
Overall this season, the Captains rank 18th in the nation with 158 ground balls and 19th in scoring defense while allowing just 6.50 goals per contest. Among the standouts on the defensive side, Young leads the team with six takeaways, while
Max Wayne and
Campbell Pozin have five apiece.
Aidan FitzGerald also has four caused turnovers and seven ground balls.
Entering Wednesday on a two-game roll, Randolph-Macon steamed over Ferrum, 22-4, on Saturday. Out-shooting the Panthers, 48-17, the Yellow Jackets scored 14 straight goals beginning in the second quarter to flip an 8-3 edge into a lopsided victory. Jack Smith led the team with four goals, while Andrew Tiffey added four assists and a pair of strikes. The hosts also won 23 of the game's 30 faceoffs, including an 18-for-25 showcase by JD Spotts.
Picked fourth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, Randolph-Macon is currently receiving votes in the USILA National Rankings. Through three games, Tiffey is the team's leading scorer with 10 points, while Spotts has a .634 faceoff percentage. Between the pipes, Oz Potter has compiled a 10.22 goals-against-average and a .425 save percentage.
In 12 previous meetings between the two programs, RMC and Christopher Newport have six wins apiece. The Captains won the last battle, 16-5, in Newport News. During that game, Rice and
Griffin Hanes both produced hat-tricks.
Following Wednesday's contest, Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday when the squad hosts No. 2 Lynchburg at 1Â p.m.
