NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will complete a brief two-game homestand on Saturday at 3 p.m. when the Captains welcome No. 4 Washington & Lee to town for a non-conference battle at Jennings Family Stadium.
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport sits at 2-1 on the season, including 1-0 at home. Meanwhile, Washington & Lee is 1-0 after opening the year with a 23-2 win over Ferrum on Tuesday.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a limited number of spectators will be permitted inside the facility for Saturday's game. Director of Athletics
Kyle McMullin has instituted a policy in which each player and coach will be allowed to include two fans on a designated pass list, while Christopher Newport students with a valid ID will be admitted until the limited capacity is reached. Visiting teams will not be permitted to have spectators in attendance.
Â
The policy, which is available at the top of this release, includes a full list of guidelines for those attending the game. Please review the policy before arriving on campus.

For those unable to attend the game, Christopher Newport will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
The Captains are coming off an impressive 23-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday. That marked the program's largest margin of victory since a 26-1 triumph over N.C. Wesleyan on April 3, 2013. Meanwhile, Christopher Newport's 23 goals equaled the sixth-highest single-game total in school history, while the squad's 18 takeaways marked the fourth-most all-time.
On an individual level,
Kelsey Winters produced 11 points after collecting five goals and six assists. With that performance, she became just the fourth player in program history to register at least five goals and five assists in a single game. Her 11 points also matched the third-highest total by a Captain, falling just one shy of equaling the record held by Christopher Newport Hall of Famers Ashton Marshall and Meghan Harkey.
Along with Winters,
Julia Iapicca established a new career-high with four goals against the Marlins, while
Cat Leighty and
Syd Guidi both contributed hat-tricks. Leighty and Iapicca also added three takeaways apiece, and
Hope Hunter came through with four caused turnovers of her own. Overall, nine different Captains forced at least one miscue during the game while limiting Virginia Wesleyan to only five total shots.
Through three games, Winters currently leads the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference with 22 points, while her 14 assists rank second among league competitors. Meanwhile, as a team, Christopher Newport ranks first in the conference in goals-per-game (18.33), shooting percentage (.514), and goals-against-average (5.67).
On the other side of the field, Washington & Lee comes to town ranked fourth in the latest IWLCA National Coaches Poll. In their first action of the year, the Generals marched through Ferrum, 23-2, as four different players recorded hat-tricks. Ginny Taylor led the way with four strikes, while Allie Schwab, Landon Shelley, and Katherine Faria had three apiece. Shelley also had four assists to round out her seven-point day.
Along with the offensive standouts, Sam Sunar earned the win after making one save in the early going, while Stefanie Chiguluri added a pair of stops in the second half. Meanwhile, three different players notched a pair of takeaways as Washington & Lee limited Ferrum to only five on-target shots during the entire game.
In 13 previous meetings between the two programs, W&L holds a 12-1 edge in the series. Last year, the Generals picked up a 16-5 win in Lexington. Faria had four points for the hosts, while Winters contributed two goals and an assist for the Captains.
After this weekend, Christopher Newport will return to action on March 16 when the squad treks to Ashland for a 7 p.m. game at Randolph-Macon.
