Ardrey and Funk Cap off Fall Campaign with Excellent Showing at NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championship

Final Results

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --
Putting a punctuation mark on the 2021 cross country season, Kaitlyn Ardrey and Logan Funk pieced together a pair of excellent efforts while representing Christopher Newport during the NCAA Women's 6K Championship on Saturday afternoon at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky.

Leading the way, Ardrey finished the race in 22:57.3. With that performance, she became just the second Captain in school history to eclipse the 23-minute mark during the 6k at the National Championships. Previously, only Amy Wampler had accomplished that feat after throwing down a time of 22:47.5 at the 2008 title meet.

With her clocking, Ardrey placed 180th in a field comprised of the top cross country runners in the nation. The senior star joined Wampler, Megan Fogarty, and Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Aimee Gibbs as the only runners in school history to finish in the top-200 at the competition since the NCAA switched to a 6k championship in 2002.

Less than 15 seconds after Ardrey crossed the line on Saturday, Funk followed with a time of 23:10.7. That clocking marked the third-fastest by a Captain at the title meet since Wampler's record-setting run in 2008. In the past 13 years, her time was only topped by Ardrey and former legend Lydia Cromwell, who finished in 23:05.2 during the 2015 championships.

Overall, Funk placed 202nd in the country on Saturday.

Of the 293 runners at the meet, only 53 increased their position in the field during each of the five checkpoints over the rolling 6k course. Incredibly, Ardrey and Funk both accomplished that feat as the two consistently picked off runners throughout the grueling race.

During her historic run, Ardrey eventually jumped 57 spots between the 1k checkpoint and the finish line, including double-digit climbs at the 3k, 4k, and 5k marks. Meanwhile, Funk improved 36 spots over the course of the race, including a huge push over the final stretch that saw her jump 12 positions during the last kilometer.

Together, Ardrey and Funk became the first pair of teammates in school history to take part in the NCAA Championships as individual participants. Previously, only the 2014 squad sent multiple runners after Christopher Newport qualified as a team during that competition.

Saturday's showcase wrapped up a successful fall for both stars. Funk claimed the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship on October 30 after setting a new school record in the 6k with a time of 21:44. Meanwhile, Ardrey was the runner-up and also earned first-team All-League accolades after finishing in 21:57.3, which marked the second-best clocking in school history.

Last week, both Captains also hauled in All-Region accolades after finishing in the top-10 at the NCAA South Championships. Funk was sixth in 22:54.1, while Ardrey was seventh in 22:59.5.
