NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport field hockey team will have a busy day on Saturday as the Captains welcome Rhodes to town for a non-conference showdown at 11 a.m. while also hosting Senior Day and the program's annual Play for CHKD Day at Jennings Family Stadium.

Donations for The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters will be collected from spectators for the field hockey game as well as the CHKD Play Day. All proceeds will benefit CHKD.

Christopher Newport enters the weekend with a 5-4 record, including a 3-0 mark at home. Meanwhile, Rhodes is 5-3 with a 4-3 ledger away from Memphis, Tennessee.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live results and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Prior to Saturday's game, Christopher Newport will hold its annual Senior Day ceremony, which will honor the achievements of Izzy Diz, Nyla Lewis, Mauri Ware, and student assistant Sam Brady. Since 2018, this year's senior class has helped the program compile a 32-15 record. Along the way, they have defeated 20 different programs in five different states while climbing as high as sixth in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll.

So far this year, Diz, Lewis, and Ware have served as the veteran backbone on the roster while starting all nine games. Ware ranks second on the squad with five goals and 13 points. Meanwhile, Diz is a two-time Coast-to-Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week honoree for her work on the back line, and Lewis has a pair of assists while remaining one of the program's elite two-way players on the midfield unit.

As a team, Christopher Newport comes into Saturday's game ranked 17th in the nation in goals-per-game with a 3.89 mark. On an individual level, Abby Asuncion is 15th in the NCAA in goals-per-game (1.22) and 19th in points-per-game (2.67).

Rhodes enters the weekend on a two-game roll. Over the past three weeks, the Lynx have allowed just a single goal, including shutout victories over Ferrum, Transylvania, and Sewanee.

So far this season, Sophie Croci has anchored the squad while scoring eight goals in six games. Her 1.33 goals-per-game average places her 10th in the NCAA. Meanwhile, Sheela Vasan and Elinor West also have three goals apiece and have scored in each of the last two games. On the defensive side, Riley Marzola has compiled a .711 save percentage and 1.37 goals-against-average in eight starts between the pipes.

In nine previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 9-0 edge in the series. The Captains won the last battle, 4-1, in 2019. Ware and Asuncion both scored in that showdown.

Following this weekend's tilt, Christopher Newport will return to action on October 12 when the Captains travel to Fredericksburg for the Coast-to-Coast Conference opener against Mary Washington at 4 p.m.
