MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. -- Christopher Newport junior
Lauren Sims fired a career-low 72 and climbed 25 spots on the individual leaderboard to lead the Captains on day two of the Golfweek DIII Fall Invite. Sims signed for an Even par round and sits tied for 16th with a 36-hole 152 (+8).
The Captains as a team shaved 10 strokes off their first round score and finished with a 307 on day two. At 48-over par with a 624 (317-307), the CNU women's golf team is currently in 11th place in the talented field of 20 teams. Centre College leads the tournamnet with a +25.
Sims had everything working from the very beginning on route to her career day, working quickly through the front nine with no issues. She scored seven pars and added birdies on the 269-yard Par 4 fourth hole and the 366-yard Par 4 sixth to head away from the clubhouse with a two-under 34.
On the back, her exceptional run continued as she found herself three-under par through 15 holes, marking the finest roll in her career. She bogeyed 16 and dropped two strokes on 17 but it hardly marred her terrific round as she recorded the fifth lowest score in the 215 rounds played in the event. It was one of only nine rounds recorded at par or better on the 5,603-yard layout at the Baytowne Golf Club.
In two rounds for the third-year player, Sims has recorded 23 pars and four birdies.
Meanwhile, the other three scores led to a top-10 showing on day two for the Captains. Senior
Shreya Ganta signed for a three-over 75 with a team-best three birdies; rookie
Alex Delgado is tied with Ganta for 34th with a 12-over 156 (75-81); and freshman
Elena Rezac added two birdies and nine pars to finish with a seven-over 79.
Cameron Marshall matched her opening round with a pair of pars to round of the lineup for CNU.
The third round of the 54-hole event will be played on Tuesday as Christopher Newport takes the course starting at 7:30 am. CNU will play with Illinois Wesleyan (T9, +47) and Trinity (7, +45) on the final day. Live scoring will be available with the link found at CNUsports.com.
