FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --
The Christopher Newport field hockey team will face its first league test of the season on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when the Captains travel to Mary Washington for a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference clash at the Battleground Turf Field.

Entering the midweek match-up, Christopher Newport is riding a three-game winning streak and currently boasts a 6-4 record. Meanwhile, Mary Washington is 8-4 and has won seven of its last eight games dating back to the middle of September.

For those unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at UMWEagles.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

The Captains picked up a 3-1 victory over Rhodes in their last outing on Saturday. During that contest, the squad out-shot the Lynx, 34-5, as Mauri Ware, Marcella Sabbagh, and Abby Asuncion found the back of the cage. Sabbagh and Asuncion both scored for the second straight game, while Ware added her sixth dagger of the season.

Saturday's game marked the seventh straight contest in which Christopher Newport has scored at least three goals. That equals the longest stretch in program history, which was established by the 2004 squad.

Equally adept on the defensive end, the Captains have three shutouts this season and four more games in which the team has allowed just a single goal. Gabi Gray currently sports a 1.89 goals-against-average and a .659 save percentage. Meanwhile, Izzy Diz is a two-time Defensive Player of the Week honoree, while Sabbagh, Nyla Lewis, and Brooke Billhimer have been dynamite on the defensive end as well.

On the other side of the field, Mary Washington registered a 4-0 victory over Rhodes on Sunday in Newport News. The Eagles picked up a pair of goals from Emma Bernard, while Riley Tengwall also added three points. Both players currently have 11 strikes this season, which is tied for the second-highest total in the conference.

Defensively, Chloe Billy leads the league with 38 saves this year, including five in the win over the Lynx. The junior goalie also boasts a 1.76 goals-against-average and .633 save percentage. Freshman Lauren Boucher also has three defensive saves to go along with nine points on the offensive end.

In 21 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 15-6 advantage in the series, including a 6-2 win during the last bout in 2019. Incredibly, every Captain who scored in that game is back on the roster as Asuncion registered a hat-trick against the Eagles, while Ware added a pair of goals, and Morgan Arthur capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter.

Following Tuesday's tilt, Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday at noon when the team travels to Raleigh, North Carolina for a neutral-site showdown with Sewanee.
