Christopher Newport is coming off of a grueling stretch that saw the squad face back-to-back nationally-ranked opponents. Although the Captains dropped a pair of decisions to No. 6 Washington & Lee and No. 24 Messiah, the squad received impressive contributions from some of the youngest members of the team.
Offensively, freshman
Kelsey Winters had five goals during that two-game stretch, including her first collegiate hat-trick against Messiah on Saturday. With those efforts, she became the first freshman in program history to record multi-goal performances in back-to-back appearances against nationally-ranked foes.
Meanwhile, on the defensive side,
Becca Creekmore had seven ground balls against Washington & Lee and 16 saves versus Messiah. Her seven rollers were the second-most by a freshman in a single-game in program history, while her 16 saves equaled the fifth-most by a newcomer. Overall, she finished that two-game stretch with 26 total stops, 12 ground balls, and three takeaways.
Along with the first-year stars,
Hannah Curry had a pair of caused turnovers against Messiah, while
Jackie Baker and
Zoe Dyer scored at least once in both contests.
On the other side of the field, Coast Guard is coming off of a 16-2 triumph at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. Registering her second straight hat-trick, Maddie Rizzuto erupted for five points, including three goals. The sophomore was one of five Bears who notched at least two goals in the game, while Haley McCue handed out a pair of assists.Â
Overall this season, Rizzuto has a team-high 15 points, including eight goals. Etta Davis and Haley Howard also have eight strikes apiece. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Davis leads the squad with six takeaways and 14 ground balls, while Mary Budri has compiled a .617 save percentage and 6.21 goals-against-average during her time in the crease. Rebecca Dolan has also started a game between the pipes and has five saves this year.
Tuesday's battle will mark the first-ever meeting between Christopher Newport and Coast Guard.
Following the midweek action, the Captains will remain at home for a noon test against Haverford on Saturday.
