NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
On a two-game roll, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will return home on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Captains host Washington (Md.) in a non-conference contest at Jennings Family Stadium.

Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport currently sits at 2-1 on the season, including 1-0 at home. Meanwhile, Washington (Md.) is 0-1 and will be making its first road trip of the year.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Christopher Newport is coming off of a dominant 19-3 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday. Against the Marlins, 10 different Captains registered at least one point, including Kelsey Winters, who tallied seven. Cat Leighty also contributed a team-high four goals, while Kendall Krause notched her first collegiate hat-trick and matched her career-high with seven draw controls.

Defensively, Christopher Newport limited Virginia Wesleyan to only six shots, which equaled the fewest by an opponent since N.C. Wesleyan mustered only a single attempt on April 3, 2013. Kaitlyn Ready picked up the win while making three saves, while Leighty and Joely Stevens tied for the team-lead with four ground balls.

During the early part of the season, the Captains are averaging nine assists per game, which ranks 12th in the NCAA. Winters has led the way with 16 helpers, which leads the conference and ranks second in the country. Excluding free-position tallies, nearly 70 percent of the team's goals this season have been assisted.

Selected fifth in the Centennial Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, Washington (Md.) graduated a decorated senior class from last year's team, which posted a 12-6 overall record. Despite losing a pair of All-Region performers, including All-American Madison Schutz, the Shorewomen return three All-Conference honorees from 2019. Aubrey Robinson headlines that contingent after also securing All-Metro Region nods while collecting 39 points, including a team-high 10 free-position strikes.

In addition to Robinson, Lauren Brenner and Catherine Keirn also picked up All-Centennial accolades last season.

So far this year, Washington (Md.) has only played one game as the squad dropped a 13-6 decision to No. 6 York (Pa.) in the opener on February 19. Against the high-powered Spartans, Olivia Miller led the Shorewomen with three points, while Colleen Keefe also collected a pair of goals. Between the pipes, Sydney Wingate and Bridgid Monahan split time and combined for 13 saves.

Saturday's game will mark the sixth all-time meeting between the two programs. Washington (Md.) currently holds a 5-0 edge in the series, including a 14-11 triumph in Chestertown last year. Despite the recent setbacks, Leighty has been a standout against the Shorewomen with six career points in her two battles against the squad, while Zoe Dyer had two goals and a pair of assists in last year's showdown.

Following this weekend's tilt, Christopher Newport will return to action on March 4 for a 3 p.m. game at No. 8 Washington & Lee.
