VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --
The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will hit the road for a 7 p.m. battle against Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday at Birdsong Field.

Entering the midweek match-up, the Captains sit at 1-1 overall and 0-1 on the road. Meanwhile, Virginia Wesleyan is 0-3 on the season and 0-1 at home.

Christopher Newport is coming off of a 15-10 triumph over Roanoke on Saturday. During the battle, Kelsey Winters established a new freshman record with seven assists. That also tied the third-highest total by any player in program history and marked the second-most by anyone in the NCAA so far this season.

Along with Winters, Zoe Dyer drove home a career-high eight goals, which matched the third-most by a Captain. Rounding out a well-balanced attack, Katie Orrison and Kendall Krause also deposited two goals apiece, while Cat Leighty added a pair of points as well. Alexis Kasuda and Sam Wettengel also found the back of the net as seven different Captains collected at least one point against the Maroons.

In addition to the offensive stars, Becca Creekmore contributed eight saves, while Krause forced two turnovers and added five ground balls. Coupled with her showcase against Shenandoah in the season opener, Krause is just the fifth Captain in school history to notch at least two takeaways and four rollers in back-to-back games. Additionally, she joins former legend Sally Allstadt as the only players to accomplish that feat while also scoring in both outings.

So far this season, Winters leads the CAC with 11 total assists, while Dyer is third with 10 goals. Krause also slots fourth in the league with nine ground balls, and Creekmore is second with 21 saves.

On the other side of the field, Virginia Wesleyan enters the week on a three-game slide, including an 11-7 setback at Goucher on February 16. The Marlins currently feature a pair of returning All-Conference selections, including Jordan Moilanen, who has 35 stops and a .500 save percentage during her time between the pipes. Tori Manahan also ranks among the team-leaders this year with seven points, nine draw controls, and seven ground balls.

Among other veterans making an impact for Virginia Wesleyan, Avery Frangelli boasts a team-high 11 points and eight goals, while Kayla Gush has seven strikes. Meanwhile, freshmen Camryn Gavula and Shaunice Rone have made a smooth transition to college while tying for the team-lead with 11 draw controls.

Overall, the two programs have met 19 times with the Captains holding a 12-7 edge in the series. Last year, Christopher Newport notched an 18-1 victory after jumping out to a fast 9-0 lead. Dyer had three points during that victory, while Gracie Sanders collected three caused turnovers, four ground balls, and a pair of goals.

Following Wednesday's trip to Virginia Beach, the Captains will return home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tussle with Washington (Md.).
