Live Stats // Video Stream

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The 14th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will cap off a brief two-game homestand on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Captains welcome Virginia Wesleyan to Jennings Family Stadium for a non-conference showdown.

Entering the contest, Christopher Newport sits at 7-2, including 4-0 at home. Virginia Wesleyan is 3-5 overall and 0-3 record on the road.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available on CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

The Captains are currently riding a three-game winning streak, including a pair of triumphs against Bridgewater and Rhodes last week. During those two contests, Sarah Mueller had a hand in half of the team's goals as the sophomore deposited two strikes while adding a pair of assists. Meanwhile, Abby Asuncion and Bailey Miller scored in both games, and Mauri Ware contributed her team-leading sixth goal on Saturday.

In addition to the offensive efforts, the defense was terrific during the two outings last week. Christopher Newport limited the opposition to only five total on-target shots during the two games and held Bridgewater without a single penalty corner.

Making a crucial impact on the squad, the Captains have continued to receive key contributions from their true freshmen. On opposite ends of the field, Asuncion has started all nine games while ranking third on the team with four goals, while Marcella Sabbagh has already been named the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week and is tied for the team-lead with three defensive saves. Meanwhile, Emma Logue has also appeared in every game and earned two starts, while Morgan Arthur has been a reliable reserve in eight of the squad's nine contests.

Overall, five first-year players have already seen time in half of the team's outings, and both Ware and Mueller have been starring during their first seasons in Newport News after spending last year at Division I institutions.

On the other side of the field, Virginia Wesleyan is coming off of a 4-3 victory over Mary Washington on Friday. During the game, UMW had a 2-1 lead in the first quarter and a 3-2 edge entering halftime, but the Marlins fought back in the second half. Elizabeth Roberto scored the game-tying goal in the third stanza before assisting on Hayden Thornbrugh's game-winner in the fourth to seal the win.

So far this season, Julie Fassl leads Virginia Wesleyan with six goals and 12 points. Roberto sits second on the squad with seven points. Both Fassl and Roberto are reigning third-team All-Conference selections from 2018. Additionally, Cori Jackson, who nabbed second-team All-League accolades in 2018, has helped anchor the midfield unit while contributing five points, and Maura Bridges has compiled a 2.72 goals-against-average and a .585 save percentage between the pipes.

Christopher Newport and Virginia Wesleyan have previously met 14 times with the Captains holding an 11-3 edge in the series. Last year, Christopher Newport walked away with its 10th straight win in the series after notching a 3-0 win in Virginia Beach. Courtney Fiest scored a pair of goals during that battle, while Jackie Kotoriy matched her career-high with three assists.
