Marymount was the aggressor from the outset in the opening game as they scored the first four points and led 9-4. With the Captains trailing 13-9, the Saints secured the next five points to go up 18-9. CNU mounted a comeback attempt by scoring seven of the next nine to get within four, 20-16, but the Saints picked up the final five points of the set to win 25-16.

Marymount got off to another strong start in set two, leading 6-3, but the Captains scored five of the next six to take an 8-7 advantage. The lead alternated several times along the way, eventually landing on a 16-16 tie, but a Carroll kill, a Garrison+Carroll block, followed by two MU attack errors but the Captains ahead 20-16. The lead remained in CNU's advantage at 24-21 when a CNU error followed by an MU kill sliced the lead to just one, 24-23, but Carroll delivered a pass to Crofford for the kill shot, 25-23, to tie the match at 1-1. Carroll posted 11 assists in the set.

Christopher Newport roared out to a 6-1 lead in the third frame but saw the lead trimmed down to just one at 11-10. The Captains picked up the next three points to go up by four and would lead by at least two the rest of the way. At 20-16 following a Captains error, CNU pushed the lead out to seven, 23-16, as a kill and block from Carroll was followed by a Garrison block.
