Captains Volleyball Checkmate Knights 3-0, Extend Win Streak to 11

BUENA VISTA, Va. - Christopher Newport Volleyball upended Southern Virginia 25-22, 25-17, 25-20 in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action on Wednesday night. Volleyball's win streak now extends to 11 games as they move to 14-6, 2-0 while SVA falls to 11-5, 1-1.

The first set was back and forth all throughout. With the score tied at 8-8, SVU picked up the next three points and would slightly extend the advantage to 17-13. From there, Katie Piper and Tiaralyn McBride took over. Piper slammed consecutive kills and service extraordinaire Tiaralyn McBride served up three straight aces to put the Captains up 18-17. Piper would finish off the 6-0 run with another kill to force a Knights timeout.

The timeout proved effective as back to back Captains errors would tie the game, and a Taryn Warner kill would push SVU back in the lead, 20-19. However, the momentum swing proved short lived. A Knights attack error would tie the set at 20-20 as Mackenzie Wright and Megan O'Hara would record the next two kills and then teamed for a block to put the Captains up 23-20 to force another SVU timeout. Courtney Singleton would pick up the next two points for Southern Virginia via kills to cut the deficit to one, but a Mykynli Knight service error gave the serve back to the Captains for match point, and Piper wasted no time finishing off the set with an ace. Piper finished the set with five kills and an ace. Carroll posted 10 assists in the frame and McBridge three aces.

After Southern Virginia took the second set's first two points, it took just five more points for them to lose the lead for good as six straight Captain points lifted CNU to an 8-3 lead. The lead would grow to as many as six and the Knights never got any closer than six points after the Captains picked up points #13. O'Hara tallied three kills and a block, and Carroll contributed eight assists.

With the third game tied at 4-4, CNU scored the next four to go up 8-4 with points coming from Riley Garrison, Carroll, and Katie Crofford. After SVU picked up the next two points, they would go on to trail by at least three the rest of the way. Ahead 18-15, Christopher Newport scored the ensuing four points to go up 22-15. With the lead still at seven, 24-17, the Knights took advantage of two Captains errors to follow with a Kaely Rath kill to draw within four, 24-20, but Carroll fed Piper for a kill to clinch the match.

Katie Piper tallied nine kills, 11 digs, and two solo blocks. Megan O'Hara and Riley Garrison each posted six kills while O'Hara had two blocks to Garrison's one. Katie Crofford tacked on five kills and eight digs, and Mackenzie Wright notched three blocks with four kills. Sammy Carroll posted 28 assists while Tiaralyn McBride registered four aces. Rebecca Frey had 11 digs to go with two aces.

Christopher Newport returns to the Freeman Center on Saturday for a bout with the University of Mary Washington at 2 p.m.
