Captains Ground Eagles 3-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University Volleyball team got the best of the Mary Washington University Eagles 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Captains to 15-6 overall and 3-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference with a 12-match win streak while UMW falls to 8-9, 2-1.

The Captains overwhelmed the Eagles in the first set 25-17, but the second set proved to be evenly contested with CNU winning by just three, 25-22. The Captains did not fool around in the third set and dominated from the outset to win 25-15.

CNU hit at a season-best rate of .418 with zero reception errors while limiting UMW to .297 with 10 reception errors. Christopher Newport led in service aces 9-1 but had 10 service errors compared to only three for Mary Washington

Katie Piper crushed a season-high 17 kills to go with just four errors on 29 attempts to a .448 hitting percentage. She also added an ace, a solo block, and four digs. Sammy Carroll registered 38 assists and a team-high nine digs to go with two kills and a block. Katie Crofford contributed eight kills, two aces, five digs, and a block, and Riley Garrison tacked on eight kills along with two blocks.

Megan O'Hara had six kills and three blocks while Mackenzie Wright posted five kills and three rejections. Rebecca Frey recorded five assists, four aces, and five digs, and Kayleigh Reagan-Smith posted seven digs and two aces.

The Captains are back in the Freeman Center this Wednesday as they host St. Mary's College of Maryland at 7 p.m. in a CAC contest.
