Captains Take First Two Matches at Worthington Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - CNU Volleyball picked up a pair of wins on Friday at the Worthington Classic hosted by Gallaudet University as they defeated York (Pa.) 3-1 and Bethany College 3-0.

The Captains scored a 25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20 win over York to open up Capital Athletic Conference play on a high note.

Sammy Carroll tallied 45 assists, eight digs, three blocks, two aces, and a kill. Katie Crofford posted a double-double with 14 kills and a team-high 15 digs. She also added an ace and two blocks. Riley Garrison totaled eight kills and four blocks. Katie Piper tacked on 14 kills, four aces, nine digs, and a block. Mackenzie Wright contributed six kills and three blocks. Rebecca Frey posted 12 digs and two aces, Kayleigh Regan-Smith had nine digs and two aces, and Tiaralyn McBride had three aces.

CNU followed a few hours later with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-18 victory over Bethany College.

Holding a narrow 10-7 lead in the first set, CNU rattled off the next six points to go up 16-7. Bethany scored the next four points to get within five, but seven consecutive points from the Captains half off any Bethany comeback hopes. CNU scored five points on six Tiaralyn McBridge serves, including one ace, while Katie Crofford added on four kills.

Bethany got the second set off to a rousing start, leading 7-4 and 9-5, and 12-8. But a kill from Riley Garrison ignited a 7-0 run to put the Captains ahead 15-12. Bethany regained the lead at 18-17 and pushed it to two at 20-18 and 21-19. However, a Bethany service error gave the ball back to the Captains who picked up the next four points with Tiaralyn McBride serving to go up 24-21 then had the 25th points awarded by the official. McBridge excelled serving in the set with the Captains winning a point on 10 of her 11 service attempts while Katie Crofford posted four kills and an ace.

The third frame proved to be tight on the scoreboard throughout much of it, with CNU up just four at 20-16, but they the Captains closed out the set strong with Maddie Carter recording a block on two of the last three points.

Crofford recorded a match-high 11 kills to go with eight digs, two aces, and a block. Sammy Carroll contributed 33 assists, four digs, and two aces. Megan O;Hara added six kills and three blocks. Riley Garrison hammered home six kills. Katie Piper posted six kills and four digs. Tiaralyn McBride registered a match-high four service aces. Rebecca Frey led the Captains in digs with 11. Maddie Carter had four kills and three blocks.
