NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 14th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team returns to Jennings Family Stadium on Saturday for an 11 a.m. battle with Rhodes, which will also serve as the program's annual CHKD Play Day.
The Captains enter the weekend with a 6-2 record, including a 3-0 mark at home. Rhodes sits at 3-2 overall.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Admission for Saturday's game will be $5 for adults and $3 for children and students. All uniformed participants and coaches in the youth Play Day following the game will be admitted free of charge. Proceeds from the game and the Play Day will benefit the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 4-0 victory at Bridgewater on Wednesday. During that contest,
Bailey Miller erupted for her third career multi-goal effort, while
Abby Asuncion and
Sarah Mueller also found the back of the cage. Mueller's strike was her first collegiate goal, while
Julia Glowatsky added her first career assist on the same play.
On the defensive side, the Captains limited the Eagles to just two shots. The first attempt was blocked by
Kennedy Johnson, while the second one was saved by
Gabi Gray. Overall, Christopher Newport did not allow a single penalty corner against Bridgewater, marking the first time an opponent went without a corner against the Captains since Rhodes was silenced on September 17, 2017.
Strong defensively throughout the season, Christopher Newport currently ranks 13th in the NCAA with seven defensive saves. Both Miller and
Marcella Sabbagh have three apiece, which places them in the top-20 on the individual list. Meanwhile, the squad's 1.08 goals-against-average stands as the 23rd-best rate in the NCAA this year. The Captains have not allowed more than one goal in regulation play during each of their last seven games, including three shutouts.
On the other side of the field, Rhodes has dropped its last two decisions, including a 2-1 overtime loss against Denison on Sunday. Despite the recent stumble, the Lynx opened the year on a three-game tear, including shutout wins over DePauw and Wittenberg. Helping lead the squad on the defensive end, Nina Migneco ranks among the top-50 nationally in both save percentage (.806) and goals-against-average (1.36).
Rhodes features a pair of decorated veterans who helped lead the program to an NCAA Tournament appearance last season. Hailey Mules was a third-team All-American in 2018 and currently leads the squad with three goals during her senior campaign. Meanwhile, Daryl Perry has continued to anchor the defensive unit after securing All-Region honors last year while also earning the SAA Defensive Player of the Year Award.
The Captains and Lynx have battled eight times in history with Christopher Newport holding an 8-0 edge in the series, including a 4-0 victory during the last battle in 2017. During that contest,
Jackie Kotoriy collected three points, while
Courtney Fiest also struck for the squad.
Despite the regular battles between the two programs, Saturday's contest will mark the first meeting in Newport News since 2010. That game featured the first collegiate goal by current assistant coach
Marlene Lichty. She went on to score three total goals against the Lynx during her career, equaling her highest amount against any single program.
