Christopher Newport is coming off of a 1-0 victory over Washington & Lee on Saturday. During the contest,
Mauri Ware scored the game's lone goal in the fifth minute of action before the defense did the rest. Leading the way,
Olivia Davis recorded the shutout after making six saves, including a pair of corner attempts. For her efforts, she was celebrated as the Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Along with Davis, the Captains have benefited from outstanding work on the defensive side of the ball throughout the year.
Bailey Miller and
Marcella Sabbagh both have three defensive saves, which place them second in the CAC this season. As a whole, the squad has limited the opposition to a .112 shooting percentage and surrendered one goal or less during regulation play in each of its last six outings.
Building cohesion in the early going, nine players have started all seven games so far this season, including four first-year Captains. Making their presence felt immediately, Ware, Sabbagh,
Abby Asuncion, and
Sarah Mueller have all started each of their first seven games with the program.
On the other side of the field, Bridgewater snapped a six-game skid on Saturday with a 3-0 victory against Transylvania before falling on Sunday to No. 18 Centre, 5-1. Kallie Moyer has a point in each of her last two outings, including an assist against the nationally-ranked Colonels. Meanwhile, Emily Witzke and Ali Bishop combined to make 18 saves on Sunday against Centre.
So far this season, 18 different Eagles have already earned a starting assignment, including Bishop and Georgia Howard, who are both reigning All-Conference performers. Howard currently leads the team with five points, while Bishop has compiled a .765 save percentage. Jacqueline DiFulvio has two goals for Bridgewater as well.
The Captains and Eagles have previously met 17 times with Christopher Newport holding a 15-2 edge in the series.
Courtney Fiest led the Captains to a 5-0 victory last year with two goals, while
Rachel Cooke also contributed three points.
