The Captains return home after splitting a pair of contests in Mequon, Wisconsin last weekend. The team upended Concordia (Wisc.), 6-1, before falling to Centre, 2-1, during an overtime shootout. During the trip, Christopher Newport showed off a well-balanced attack as six different players scored a goal.
Mauri Ware added a strike in both games, while
Courtney Fiest came through with her third of the season and
Abby Asuncion contributed her second.
Along with the multi-goal scorers,
Sarah Coon,
Jackie Kotoriy, and
Kirsten Zeigler all found the back of the cage for the first time in 2019. Although not credited with a goal,
Rachel Cooke and
Sarah Mueller also converted attempts during the shootout session against Centre.
In addition to the offensive heroes, Christopher Newport currently ranks 13th in the NCAA with six defensive saves this season. On an individual level,
Bailey Miller is tied for 13th in the country with three stops, including crucial plays in one-goal victories over No. 9 Rochester and No. 5 Johns Hopkins. Freshman
Marcella Sabbagh also has a pair of defensive saves, and
Kennedy Johnson added one against DePauw.
Equally effective on the defensive side,
Olivia Davis came through with her 100th career save against Centre on Sunday. With that performance, she became the first Captain to reach that milestone since Bailey Lien accomplished the feat during the 2014 campaign. Overall, the senior goalkeeper now ranks seventh in program history with 100 career stops, while her 17 wins place her fifth on the all-time charts.
On the other side of the field, Washington & Lee is coming off of a 5-2 setback against Ursinus on Sunday. That loss marked the program's second of the year against a nationally-ranked opponent as the Bears are currently slotted 11th in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll. The Generals also dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 5 Johns Hopkins in the season opener.
So far this season, Grace Weise leads W&L with three goals and seven points. All three of her strikes have come in the last two games, including a pair during a victory over Dickinson last Saturday. Meanwhile, the Generals also feature a pair of returning All-Conference selections in Lauren Paolano and Caroline Caruso. Paolano ranks fourth in program history with 44 career goals, while Caruso is in her third year as a starter on the midfield unit.
Longtime rivals, Washington & Lee and Christopher Newport have previously met 15 times with the Captains holding a 13-2 edge in the series. However, W&L won last year's battle, 3-2, in Lexington. Paolano registered a hat-trick for the hosts, while Kotoriy and
Ariana Samuel scored for the Captains.
