Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- For the fifth consecutive season, the second-seeded Christopher Newport women's tennis team fell at top-seeded Mary Washington in the Capital Athletic Conference Championship match on Saturday afternoon. The Captains dropped a 5-0 decision to the 15th-ranked Eagles, who captured the program's 16th consecutive league title and will advance to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships.
With the loss in the championship bout, Christopher Newport concludes the season with a 13-8 overall record.
Christopher Newport nearly stole a point from the Eagles in doubles play at No. 3 doubles where
Reagan Delp and
Kara Ferner pulled ahead of their opponents, 5-1. The Eagles combo of Sophie Dixon and Olivia Moore rallied to tie the match at five games apiece before the Captains re-took the lead, 6-5. Unfortunately for the CNU tandem, Dixon and Moore recouped after the loss and pulled out a tight 8-6 finish.
On the top line,
Johanna Ranta-aho and
Olivia Reed hung with one of the best pairings in the country as Rachel Summers and Lauren Quinn gave up four games to the Captains before securing an 8-4 win.
With the doubles sweep, Mary Washington needed just two singles wins to capture the league title. First, Rachel Cooper ousted CNU rookie
Alison Burgess at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1, before Danielle Mirabala clinched the match at No. 4 over Delp, 6-0, 6-3.
