Dominic Lacombe suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles National Championship on Friday morning, concluding his season after becoming the first Captain to qualify for the postseason event since 2012.
Lacombe followed CNU Hall of Famer Eric Shulman as the most recent CNU player to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship and the first qualifier under head coach
Eric Christiansen. He took on second-seeded Grant Urken out of Bowdoin College in the first round while playing at the West Hill courts in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The CNU junior suffered a 6-1 loss in the first set to Urken before falling 6-2 in the second.
He finished out his season with a 12-11 overall record after moving up to the top line for the first time in his career. In dual action, he was 9-4 at No. 1 singles, marking the finest run through the top line since 2011-12 when Shulman was 16-3.
Lacombe, a Halifax, Nova Scotia native, has won 45 singles matches in his first three years as a Captain, putting him just outside the top-ten all-time at Christopherr Newport.
