Regional and Weather Look Super for NCAA Softball Friday as Captains Host Randolph-Macon

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - It's almost Super Regional time at Christopher Newport, as the 11th-ranked Captains are set to host the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College this weekend. Partly cloudy conditions are forecast with temperatures in the mid 80's as the regional rivals square off in a best-of-three series at Captains Park. The winner will be one of eight teams advancing to the National Finals next week in Tyler, Texas.

Just one game will be played Friday with start time set for 4:00 p.m. The squads will return to meet on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. If needed, a third and deciding game would be played at approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets for the NCAA action will be available at Captains Park, and are $10.00 for adults and $7.00 for students.

Keith Parr's squad won three straight games last weekend in the Union, New Jersey Regional, defeating the College of Staten Island and the host school, Kean, twice. CNU won the Capital Athletic Conference crown this year and the Captains have a 36-7 overall record. This is the 13th straight year the Captains have advanced to the NCAA Tournament, and the 17th time in the 35-year history of the program. CNU is now 37-32 all-time in NCAA play.

Sophomore designated player Patty Maye Ohanian led the Captains last weekend, and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the regional. Ohanian was 8-for-11 with four home runs and 11 runs batted in. Over the last two seasons, Ohanian has posted remarkable numbers in regional play, going 16-for-26 (.615) with eight home runs, 22 RBIs, and 12 runs scored in seven games.

Randolph-Macon is 28-14 overall and the Yellow Jackets emerged from the Ewing, NJ, Regional last week. R-MC was declared as the team advancing when rain forced the cancellation of Sunday's and Monday's scheduled final against Arcadia. CNU and Randolph-Macon split a doubleheader in Ashland on April 3rd, and the Captains hold an 18-6 lead in the all-time series.
