Christopher Newport is coming off of an 18-7 setback at No. 5 Mary Washington on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Captains set fire to the record books during that contest.
Kaitlyn Ready made 13 saves against the Eagles, which bumped her career total to 484. That established the new school standard, topping Gayle Robinson's previous mark of 472 set from 2007-10.
Along with Ready,
Sarah Culver added a hat-trick on the offensive end, including a pair of darts from the eight-meter arc. With that performance, she broke the school record for career free-position goals. The senior now has 57 during her tenure, beating former All-American Meaghan Galvin's total of 55 set from 2014-17.
So far this season, the Captains have been successful at frustrating opposing attacks and forcing miscues. CNU is averaging 10.29 caused turnovers per game, which currently ranks as the highest single-season rate in program history. On an individual level,
Sam Wettengel has forced 28 turnovers, which places her third on the program's all-time charts.
Victoria Betterly has also caused 22, which is one shy of matching Monica Evans' freshman record.
On the back end,
Kendall Krause and
Taylor Walker have started all 14 games and combined for 20 caused turnovers. Meanwhile,
Riley Rafterry-Lee has 11 starts in 13 appearances, while
Joely Stevens has seen action in the last four games, including her first career start during the squad's win over Southern Virginia last Tuesday.
On the other side of the field, Salisbury is riding a three-game winning streak, including a 22-3 triumph over Frostburg State on Saturday. The team's only two setbacks this season came in an overtime battle with Washington & Lee and an 11-6 loss against Middlebury. Currently, W&L is ranked first in the IWLCA National Coaches Poll, while Middlebury is slotted third in the rankings.
So far this season, Salisbury's Skye Graham ranks second in the CAC with a .500 save percentage and third with an 8.21 goals-against-average. She has three double-digit save efforts this year, including an 11-stop performance in a victory at No. 4 Franklin & Marshall on March 27. On the offensive end, Alexis Strobel is second in the conference - and 11th in the NCAA - with 37 assists.
In 18 previous meetings between the two programs, Salisbury holds an 18-0 record. The Sea Gulls won a pair of games last season, including an 18-9 decision in the semifinals of the CAC Tournament. Culver led the Captains with five points during that game, while Ready came through with 14 saves.
