NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport's top-ranked softball team has a key non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. The Captains, 18-2, head to Ashland to take on the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College. The first game is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.

Keith Parr's squad is coming off a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Southern Virginia University. The Captains took both over the Knights in five innings due to the eight-run rule, winning by scores of 12-0 and 12-2. The games in Buena Vista marked the first Capital Athletic Conference action of the year for CNU.

The Captains were fueled by five home runs in the twin bill, and the team has now hit 31 this year in just 20 games. Freshman Kaitlyn Hasty, who recorded three on Saturday, leads the team with nine blasts for the season. Sophomore Patty Maye Ohanian and freshman Bailey Roberts have each posted six round-trippers. Junior starting pitcher Aubrey Bates leads CNU in the circle, and has an 8-1 record so far this season.

Randolph-Macon has struggled of late, and the Yellow Jackets have dropped their last three games. R-MC heads into Wednesday's action with an overall mark of 14-9 and 4-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. CNU and Randolph-Macon have played 22 games over the years, and the Captains have a 17-5 lead in the all-time series.

Following Wednesday's twin bill in Ashland, the Captains return home for doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Captains Park. CNU will host Frostburg State on Saturday and Meredith on Sunday, with both doubleheaders beginning at 1:30 p.m.
