NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport will host its final regular-season action on Tuesday, as the third-ranked Captains take on the Lions of Penn State Harrisburg. The Capital Athletic Conference softball doubleheader will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Captains Park.
Keith Parr's squad is 24-4 overall and coming off a CAC split on Sunday with York College (Pa.), as the Captains had a 16-game home winning streak snapped by the Spartans. CNU won the opener, 10-7, but dropped the second game by a 2-1 score. Christopher Newport is now 16-2 at home this season, and had not lost at Captains Park since the opening game of the season against Emory & Henry on February 10th.
The Captains have shown tremendous power all season, and have recorded 42 home runs in just 28 games played, second-most in the nation. Freshman
Kaitlyn Hasty has 12 after blasting two more on Sunday vs. York, and is tied for third in the country. The all-time school record for home runs in a season is 50 set by the 2011 Captains.
Penn State Harrisburg will enter play Tuesday afternoon with a 12-14-1 overall record and the Lions are 1-7 in the CAC following a split on Monday with Southern Virginia. The Knights won the opener, 1-0, but the Lions bounced back to take game two, 10-0.
Following Tuesday's games, the Captains will hit the road this weekend to conclude the regular season schedule. CNU will play CAC doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Salisbury and Mary Washington to put the finishing touches on the 2019 campaign.
