NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport softball squad has a busy week ahead, as the 13th-ranked Captains embark on a Spring Break trip to North Carolina and Georgia for three doubleheaders in the next four days.
Keith Parr's team is off to a 3-1 start and coming off two victories at home on Saturday over fifth-ranked Rowan and McDaniel. CNU will play a twin bill on Wednesday in Rocky Mount, NC, against North Carolina Wesleyan. The first game is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. The Bishops are 2-3 so far and coming off a split at Brevard on Friday and a split at Piedmont on Saturday.
The Captains will then head to Raleigh for a doubleheader at Meredith on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. The Avenging Angels are off to an 0-3 start, and dropped a pair on Tuesday at home to Guilford. The trip will then extend to Demorest, GA, for a Saturday twin bill at Piedmont. Game one is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. against the 5-2 Lady Lions.Â
Patty Maye Ohanian has led the Captains, and was selected the Capital Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week for her efforts against Rowan and McDaniel on Saturday. The weekly award is the second for the sophomore in her decorated career. She was previously celebrated as the CAC Softball Player of the Week as a freshman on April 9, 2018.
Â
After a nearly three-week hiatus since CNU's last official softball game, Ohanian showed no signs of rust following the weather-related layoff. Starring for the Captains during the doubleheader on Saturday, she was perfect at the plate. She reached base safely in all seven of her plate appearances after finishing 5-for-5 with two walks. She also knocked in five runs, scored twice, and swiped a pair of bases during the two games.
Â
Overall, the Captains scored in seven different innings during the doubleheader. Incredibly, Ohanian reached base during each of those rallies and either scored or knocked in a run in six of them. Along with her work at the plate, the second-year star also flashed her wheels on the base paths. She stole a bag during each game and scored all the way from first on a single during a five-run rally in the second inning against McDaniel.
Â
So far this season, Ohanian is hitting .500 during the squad's first four games. The reigning first-team All-American also has a team-best .571 on-base percentage while helping Christopher Newport compile their 3-1 record in the early going.
