CNU Women's Lacrosse Looks to Extend Winning Streak on Wednesday at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will look to extend its three-game winning streak on Wednesday when the Captains travel to Randolph-Macon for a 7 p.m. match-up at Day Field.

Entering the contest, CNU sits at 3-3 on the season, including 1-1 away from Newport News. On the other side, Randolph-Macon is 2-2, including 0-2 at home.

Wednesday's battle will mark the fourth straight game for the Captains against a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. So far this season, Christopher Newport is 3-1 against the ODAC with its only setback coming against No. 3 Washington & Lee, who was named the preseason favorite in the league.

The Captains are coming off of a 19-12 triumph against Roanoke during the squad's Spring Break trip to Puerto Rico last Tuesday. During that contest, Cat Leighty collected 11 points, equaling the third-highest single-game total in program history. That performance also earned her the CAC Offensive Player of the Week Award.

Along with Leighty, four other Captains notched hat-tricks against the Maroons, including four-point efforts by Julia Golden and Gracie Sanders. Overall, eight different players tallied at least one point during the squad's victory over Roanoke, while Kaitlyn Ready made 16 saves to earn the win.

During CNU's recent winning streak, the defense has found its rhythm. The Captains have allowed an average of 7.33 goals-per-game over the past three contests. Sam Wettengel has a team-high seven caused turnovers during that stretch, while Golden and Kendall Krause have six apiece. Taylor Walker and Riley Rafterry-Lee have helped suffocate opposing attacks as well from their perch on the back line.

Randolph-Macon comes into Wednesday's tilt after upending Cost Guard, 16-10, at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland on Saturday. During that game, the Yellow Jackets burst out to a 10-4 halftime lead before cruising to the victory. Hannah Jones was one of nine different players to score a goal during the victory while also notching her 100th career point.

Overall this season, Bella Sampler has a team-high 11 points, including seven goals. Jones has also found the back of the net eight times this year. In addition to the offensive standouts, Kaylyn Hewes has collected 17 draw controls, while Elicia Wells has compiled a .485 save percentage and an 11.33 goals-against-average during her time between the pipes.

In 16 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 9-7 edge in the series, including three straight victories. Last year, the Captains posted a 21-16 win in Newport News after receiving eight points from Sarah Culver.

Following Wednesday's game, CNU will return home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest against No. 22 Scranton.
