FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After winning the 2018-19 Capital Athletic Conference regular season title outright, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team was rewarded with a league-high four postseason accolades announced on Wednesday morning. Freshman guard
Sondra Fan (Poquoson, Va.) was named the Conference Rookie of the Year and
Bill Broderick picked up his second career "Bill Finney" Conference Coach of the Year honors. On the All-Conference squads, senior
Jessica Daguilh (Clifton, Va.) and junior
Kiana Kirkland (Woodbridge, Va.) each earned first team All-CAC honors as CNU was the only team with multiple first team selections.
Fan is the first Christopher Newport player to earn CAC Rookie of the Year plaudits since the Captains joined the league in 2013-14. She is only the fourth player in program history earn conference rookie of the year honors and the first since Camry Green in 2011-12. This year, the Poquoson, Va. native has been a leader on both ends of the floor as the team's second leading scorer (10.7 ppg) and leader in steals (61).
Her 61 thefts rank in the top-five all-time for a CNU freshman while ranking fourth overall in the league and first among first-year players. She has also dished out 57 assists and grabbed 63 rebounds as the well-rounded player is putting up historic shooting numbers as well. Knocking down 32 three-pointers and 38.6% of her triples this season, Fan ranks tied for fourth in makes and currently second all-time in shooting percentage by a freshman from beyond the arc. Her reliability at the line (.791) is also the second best for a freshman and near a top-ten mark all time at CNU.
Head coach
Bill Broderick recorded his 150th career win early this season and has guided the Captains to the program's fourth straight 20-win season. He led CNU to an 11-3 performance in CAC action this season, picking up his 100th win against conference opponents while improving to 100-20 all-time (.833). It is the second time in the last three seasons that Broderick was named the "Bill Finney" CAC Coach of the Year after guiding the senior class to 99 victories over the last four years. On the court this season, CNU's defense ranks fourth nationally in steals and turnovers forced while the scoring offense ranks in the top-25 in the country.
Leading the way for Broderick's Captains in 2018-19 were a pair of first-team All-Conference selections. Each player earned their first career postseason honor as
Jessica Daguilh and
Kiana Kirkland continued a streak of seven straight years with at least one first team pick for CNU. It is the second straight year and the third time in Broderick's tenure that two Captains earned first team All-CAC honors in the same year.
Powered by her strong senior campaign, Daguilh has climbed to sixth all-time in career shooting percentage at CNU by knocking down 52.6% of her shots of her four-year tenure. This year, she has set career-high's across the board with 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting 53.6% from the floor. She elevated her game against conference opponents, averaging over 12 points per game with four 20+ point performances. She scored a career-high 27 points in a double-double against York (Pa.) on January 2 and added 20-point efforts against St. Mary's (Md.), Frostburg State, and Penn State Harrisburg. This season, she has four double-doubles and has served as the only Captain to start all 26 games.
Kiana Kirkland earns her first career All-CAC recognition after a breakout junior campaign that saw the guard average neary 12 points per game. A dangerous threat off the bounce and shooting from distance, Kirkland has knocked down 24 triples while converting nearly 40% of her attempts from the field. She is averaging 2.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 2.1 steals per game this year. Kirkland has scored in double figures in 15 of her 23 games played this season including three 20+ point performances. She scored a career-high 23 in a win over Southern Virginia on February 6 that helped propel the Captains to their second regular season title in her career.
The Captains improved to 21-5 on Tuesday night with a win over St. Mary's in the CAC Quarterfinals. The Captains will return to action on Thursday, February 21 at 6:00 pm to take on #4 Mary Washington at the Freeman Center.
