FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- All four doubles tandems advanced to the Round of 16 and two Christopher Newport men's tennis players are still alive in the championship singles draw after the first day of competition at the 2019 ITA Southeast Regional Championships.
The Captains were led by senior
Dominic Lacombe and newcomer
Scotty Hunter in Friday's opening round performance. Both of the Captains went 2-0 in singles play and 1-0 in doubles action in the championship draw.
Lacombe, the top seed in this year's Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships, won both of his matches in singles play to advance to the Round of 16 Saturday. He downed Virginia Wesleyan's Timothy Tep (6-1, 6-2) and Mary Washington's Joseph Brown (6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2) to advance. He also paired with
Alec Strause to earn an 8-3 win over Franklin & Marshall's Adith Chandavarkar and Justin Pace.
Hunter's first regional appearance in a Captains uniform saw him seeded fifth and facing off against Stevenson's Andre Sturniolo in the opening round. He dropped only a single game in winning 6-1, 6-0 before moving on to sweep Haverford's David Kong in the second round 6-2, 6-3. He was also seeded in the doubles bracket while playing with
Ryan Macy en route to an 8-2 victory against Haverford's Kong and George Jiang.
The other two tandems Christopher Newport entered into the championship doubles draw also advanced on Friday and will return to action in the Round of 16 on Saturday.
James Baron and
Andy Mason, seeded ninth, defeated Bradley Pappalardo and Ryan Santmyer from Salisbury, 8-6, for one of the wins. One of the most impressive upsets of the day came when Christopher Newport's rookie pairing
Matthew Dubuque and
Bently Goodwin matched up to take down second-seeded veteran duo from Mary Washington Michael Fleming and Moses Hutchison. The Captains won the match 8-6.
Action will continue from Fredericksburg, Va. starting early Saturday morning. Results can be found through the link on the men's tennis schedule at CNUsports.com.
