ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Christopher Newport sailing team closed the doublehanded portion of it's fall schedule this weekend, participating in a pair of conference championship regattas. The Captains finished 10th at the MAISA Women's Fall Dinghy Championships in Maryland while also recording a 12th-place showing at the War Memorial, the co-ed MAISA fall championship.
With the showing at the War Memorial, the Captains automatically qualified for the America Trophy in the spring while also clinching a berth into the MAISA Team Race League.
The B division boat had an exceptional showing for the Captains, posting a ninth-place effort with 105 total points scored.
Vir Menon sailed in the driver's seat for the first six races with
Ethan Caldwell before shifting to the front of the boat as crew for skipper
Spencer Charney in the final 12 races.
Led by Menon, the B division sailors posted eight top-ten efforts in the first 10 races, including a second place showing to match the best of the weekend for Christopher Newport. That run also included two third- and two fourth-place finishes.
Paired with the solid showing from the B division boat, the A division group scored 131 points and finished 11th.
Javier Gonzalez Rotge paired wth
Carson Rozell and
Bailey Hurst in the boat, which captured one second and one third place showing. Overall, the group scored seven top ten efforts.
As a team, the boats combined for 236 total points and a 12th place showing overall. The Captains were just 14 points back of a top-ten showing in King's Point.
In Maryland, the women's team sailed in 12 total races to capture the tenth place finish as a group. They finished with 199 total points after a 91-point showing from A division and 108 points by B division.
The A division duo of
Anna Patterson and
Alesha Darling finished in ninth place with just one finish outside of the top ten. They closed the regatta strong with a second-place showing in the final outing. In B division,
Emily Key and
Maiya Foleck paired with
Alexandria Brooks over the weekend to finish 10th. Key and Brooks sailed to a fourth place effort in the seventh race to highlight the weekend's overall racing for the Captains.
