YORK, Pa. -- The 13th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will head north this weekend as the Captains prepare for a Capital Athletic Conference showdown at York (Pa.) beginning at noon on Saturday at Kinsley Field.
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport sits at 11-4 overall and 2-1 against conference foes. On the other side, York (Pa.) is 9-7 with an identical 2-1 record in league action.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at YCPSpartans.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
The Captains are coming off of an 8-0 victory against Southern Virginia on Wednesday evening. During that contest,
Madison McGowan celebrated Senior Day with five points, while
Abby Asuncion also scored twice. Rounding out the goal-scorers,
Mauri Ware,
Ariana Samuel,
Emma Logue, and
Courtney Fiest also found the back of the cage against the Knights.
With her third-quarter strike, Samuel continued a trend of getting hot as the weather gets colder. Over the past three years, half of her goals have come in the final two weeks of the regular season, including a game-winner against Frostburg State in 2018 and a key strike against York (Pa.) during a late October battle as a freshman in 2017.
Equally impressive on the attack, Asuncion and Ware both have 10 goals this season, which ties them for second in the CAC. They are the first pair of teammates to reach double-digit goals in the same year since four Captains eclipsed 10 strikes during the Final Four run in 2013.
York (Pa.) enters the weekend following a 2-1 setback against St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday. That snapped a three-game home winning streak for the Spartans. In fact, it marked their first regulation loss at home this season following a pair of overtime setbacks against Shenandoah and Dickinson last month.
On the offensive end, the Spartans have been led by Abby Piotrowski, who ranks sixth in the conference with 19 points and fifth with five assists. Fellow freshman Hannah Huffman also ranks second on the squad with 15 points and six goals. Defensively, Sam Keating and Kaitlyn Wallace have split time between the pipes while compiling a combined .732 save percentage and four shutouts.
In seven previous match-ups between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 4-3 edge in the series, including a 2-1 victory in the CAC Semifinals last year. However, York (Pa.) holds a 3-1 record at home in the series, including a 2-1 win during the 2018 regular season.
