Â
Marching towards the end of the regular season, the Captains jumped to 13th in the latest National Coaches Poll, which was released on Tuesday afternoon. The squad picked up 450 points in the poll, which placed it just behind 12th-ranked Messiah.
Â
Along with Messiah, several other familiar names dot the NFHCA Coaches Poll. Christopher Newport has already squared off with six programs listed in the most recent rankings, including No. 3 Salisbury, No. 9 Johns Hopkins, No. 14 Vassar, No. 15 Centre, and No. 19 Lynchburg. Meanwhile, Rochester sits just outside of the top-20.
Â
Headlining the rankings, Middlebury continues to hold down the No. 1 position, while TCNJ, Salisbury, Bowdoin, and Franklin & Marshall round out the top-five.
Â
Entering the midweek match-up, Christopher Newport sits at 10-4 overall and is coming off of a week in which the team engaged in a pair of nationally-ranked showdowns with Vassar and Salisbury. During the two contests, Miller continued piecing together an incredible senior campaign after scoring a pair of goals against Vassar while adding a defensive save against the Sea Gulls. Meanwhile,
Abby Asuncion also found the back of the cage with her eighth strike of the season on Saturday, tying her with current teammate
Jackie Kotoriy for the second-most goals by a freshman in program history.
Â
Along with Kotoriy,
Marcella Sabbagh also continued climbing the all-time freshman charts. Against Vassar, the first-year standout collected her fifth defensive save of the year, placing her just one shy of matching
Brittan Muir's freshman standard.
Â
Overall this season, Christopher Newport ranks seventh in the nation with 14 defensive stops, while the squad's .820 save percentage is the 20th-best mark in the country. On the conference level,
Mauri Ware is second in the league with nine goals and 23 points, and
Olivia Davis stands second with a stellar .803 save percentage.
Â
On the other side of the field, Southern Virginia comes into the game as a first-year program. During their inaugural season, the Knights are currently 0-13, including 0-2 against league foes. However, three of their setbacks have come by only one goal, including a 1-0 overtime loss against Sweet Briar last week.
Â
On an individual level, Kyla Nase ranks fifth in the country with 154 saves this season. The freshman has eight games with double-digit stops, including a career-high 27 against Randolph-Macon on September 4. That stands as the sixth-highest single-game total in the NCAA this year. Meanwhile, Mariely Aquin scored the first goal in program history with a strike at Bryn Athyn on September 28, and Paige Anderson has a team-high two defensive saves.
