Mackenzie Wright Block Party Helps Lift CNU to 3-1 Win over Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Mackenzie Wright recorded a Capital Athletic Conference individual season-high of 10 blocks to help lift Christopher Newport Volleyball to a 25-13, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22 win over Mary Washington for the season sweep. It was just the second set CNU has lost in CAC play as they improve to 19-7, 7-0 while Mary Washington fell to 11-12, 5-2.

A CNU victory on or a Mary Washington loss on Wednesday will clinch the CAC regular-season title for the Captains as well as the #1 seed in the CAC Conference Championship in November.

The first set was Captain domination from the outset as they led by six, 8-2, after just 10 points. The closest the Eagles would get the rest of the way was five at 10-5 and 11-6. From there, CNU scored five straight to go ahead 16-6 and led by as many as nine the rest of the way.

With the second frame tied at 6-6, the Captains scored the next five points to go ahead 11-6. Mary Washington kept within striking distance with a deficit between three to six points, but with the Captains ahead 20-15, CNU scored four of the next five to go ahead 24-16. After UMW picked up the next two points, Sammy Carroll fed Katie Crofford for a kill to go up 2-0.

CNU had to play from behind for nearly the entire third set. Trailing 12-9, the Eagles tallied six of the next seven points to go in front 18-10. Still trailing by eight at 19-11, the Captains ripped off the following four points to get within four, 19-15, but Mary Washington would push the lead to six at 23-17. CNU threatened a comeback with three consecutive points, but the Eagles finished it off with the last two points to force a fourth set.

The Captains appeared set to bounce back in resounding fashion to start the fourth set, securing the first five points. CNU gradually built the lead up to seven at 17-10 only to see Mary Washington come all the way back to tie it at 17-17. The Captains regained the lead on the next two points and pushed the advantage up to four at 24-20. The Eagles would get the next two points, but Megan O'Hara spiked home the kill shot off a Sammy Carroll pass to win the match.

Mackenzie Wright posted 13.0 points on six kills with a .545 hitting percentage to go with four solo blocks and six assisted blocks. Katie Piper had a game-high 16.5 points on 14 kills (.312) and three blocks along with seven digs and an ace. Katie Crofford double-double with 12 kills, 12 digs, and a block. Megan O'Hara racked up 10 kills and four blocks. Sammy Carroll dished out 35 assists along with 12 kills, two blocks, two aces, and two kills. Rebecca Frey had team-highs of 14 digs and three aces in addition to five assists.

CNU limited UMW to a .137 hitting percentage. UMW recorded just one service ace to 14 serve errors while the Captains picked up eight aces. The Eagles struggled to receive serves as well with eight reception errors. Christopher Newport beat Mary Washington at their own game at the net, holding a 14-7 lead in blocks. The 14 blocks are tied for the fifth-most in school history in a four-set match.

CNU will hit the road again as they head to St. Mary's (Md.) for a CAC bout at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
