The first set was never competitive as the Captains sprinted out to a 7-1 lead. Still up six at 11-5, CNU tallied six straight points to go out in front 17-5. The Seahawks trimmed the deficit to eight at 19-11, but CNU scored six of the last eight to win 25-13 with the final point coming off a
Tiaralyn McBride ace.
With CNU leading 5-4 in the second set, the hosts reeled off seven consecutive points to go up 11-5. Six of the next seven points went in Christopher Newport's advantage to slice the deficit to just one, 12-11. The Captains tied it at 14-14 but continued to play from behind over the next several points, trailing 19-17. It was the
Abby Oren show from there as she tied the game on back-to-back kills. Following spikes from
Katie Crofford and
Mackenzie Wright and an SMC attack error, Oren posted two more kills to make it a 24-19 Captains lead. A Chanel Lucas attack error finished off the set.
The fourth set proved to be back and forth with numerous ties at 3-3, 6-6, and 9-9. After SMC scored three points to tie it at 9-9, CNU secured the next four points to lead 13-9. The lead continued to hover between 2-4 points for much of the match. Up 20-17, a pair of SMC attack errors followed by a
Rebecca Frey ace made it a 23-17 score. St. Mary's tallied two of the following three points on service errors, but
Megan O'Hara finished off the match with a kill.
Abby Oren posted a match-high 11 kills while hitting .476. She added three digs and a block.
Sammy Carroll contributed match-highs of 29 assists, 11 digs, and three aces.
Katie Crofford recorded four kills, two assists, two aces, five digs, and a block.
Katie Piper added six kills, three digs, a block, and an assist.
Tiaralyn McBride tied Carroll for a match-high of three aces and added three digs while
Kayleigh Reagan-Smith also tied the match-high in aces at three.
The Captains limited the Seahawks to a -0.060 attack percentage as they committed 18 errors to only 14 kills. CNU hit .140 and had thirteen service aces.
CNU returns home for a Friday night match vs. York at 7 p.m. and a Saturday afternoon contest against Washington and Lee at 1 p.m.
