Captains Split vs. Salisbury, Stockton

SALISBURY, Md. - The Captains extended their win streak to 14 with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-22) win vs. Salisbury but saw it snapped a couple of hours later in a 3-2 (29-27, 23-25, 12-25, 25-21, 15-17) loss against Stockton on the campus of Salisbury. CNU is now 17-7 on the year, 5-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference.

CNU got off to a hot start with a 5-0 lead but surrendered seven of the next eight to trail 8-6. Trailing 10-8, the Captains went on a 10-3 run to go ahead 18-13. The Sea Gulls battled back to get within one at 22-21, but the Captains closed it out for the win.

The second set was all Captains as they raced out to an 11-4 lead and led by at least five the entire way.

The third set was tight early but CNU went on a run to get ahead 17-10. The Sea Gulls battled to back within two on numerous occasions, including 24-22, but Riley Garrison finished off the match with a kill.

Katie Piper registered a match-high eight kills to go with two aces, nine digs, and a block. Megan O'Hara and Katie Crofford each contributed six kills with Crofford adding on five digs and two blocks and O'Hara tacking on a block. Sammy Carroll distributed 23 assists to go with two aces, four digs, and two kills. Rebecca Frey racked up 14 digs.

The Captains shut down the Sea Gulls stars. Amanda Chew, who leads the CAC in kills per set, was held to seven kills, her second-lowest number of the year, while being limited to a season-low two digs. Additionally, Chloe Adam ranked top-ten in the CAC in kills coming in and managed just seven on the afternoon. Jenna Feinauer, the CAC's leading blocker, was held to just one block, only the second time this season she failed to block multiple shots. Blair Pausic, the newly anointed starting setter, contributed just 12 assists with her previous low as a starter being 29. The CAC's leader in digs, Hailey Dougherty, tallied only nine digs, her second-lowest total of the year.

The first set vs. Stockton was tight in the early going with Stockton ahead just 13-10, but they expanded their lead to 21-12. With the Captains seeming dead in the water at 22-14, the staged a miraculous comeback to tie the game at 23-23. With the set knotted at 27-27, Megan O'Hara and Katie Crofford posted back-to-back kills to finish off the comeback and go ahead 1-0.

The script flipped in the second set. CNU pulled ahead 13-6, but the Ospreys went on a 10-1 run to jump ahead 16-14. Christopher Newport came back to wrestle control of the set at 23-21, but consecutive Julie Kohlhoff kills tied the set at 23-23, then consecutive attack errors did in the Captains to make it a 1-1 contest.

The third set was all Stockton as they scored the first six points. CNU kept the score within striking distance at 10-6, but 10 of the next 13 points went Stockton's way to put them ahead 2-1.

The fourth set was back and forth with CNU ahead 12-11, then they went on a 7-0 spurt to jump ahead 18-11. Stockton trimmed the deficit to only one at 20-19, but the Captains responded with three consecutive points to build some breathing room. The Ospreys picked up the next two points, but a kill from O'Hara followed by an Ospreys attack error forced a fifth and deciding set.

The final set was neck and neck the entire way with the largest lead from either team being just three points. Tied at 13-13 and 15-15, Stockton scored the final two points to take the match.

Katie Crofford notched a double-double with 15 kills, 19 digs, and a block. Sammy Carroll tied er career-high for assists with 47 while adding 16 digs and an ace. Megan O'Hara recorded 12 kills with three blocks. Abby Oren recorded 12 kills with two blocks. Rebecca Frey picked up 21 digs with seven assists and two aces. Kayleigh-Reagan Smith tacked on 14 digs and four aces.

While the Captains led in points (77-59), kills (59-48), aces (10-5), and blocks (8-6), CNU had 18 service errors compared to only nine for Stockton.

CNU looks to get back in the win column on Wednesday when they welcome CAC foe Southern Virginia University to the Freeman Center for a 7 p.m. contest.
