Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport Volleyball team remained undefeated in Capital Athletic Conference play with a 28-26, 25-23, 25-14 win over Southern Virginia on Wednesday night. CNU improves to 18-7, 6-0 in the CAC while Southern Virginia drops to 13-9, 2-4.
CNU was rolling to start the match, getting ahead by double-digits in the first only to find Southern Virginia roar back to force extras where the Captains upended the Knights 28-26. The second set proved to be every bit as competitive with 14 ties and nine lead changes, but Christopher Newport prevailed 25-23. The final set proved to be all CNU as the Captains rolled from the outset and denied any chance of another huge SVU comeback.
Riley Garrison led CNU with 11 kills with just two errors on 20 attempts for a .450 hitting percentage. She also added three total blocks, two solo. Sammy Carroll contributed 31 assists, three kills, and four digs. Mackenzie Wright recorded eight kills and four blocks while Megan O'Hara posted seven kills and three blocks. Katie Piper had eight kills and nine digs. Rebecca Frey tallied a match-high 15 digs and an ace. Kayleigh Reagan-Smith registered nine digs and two aces. Tiaralyn McBride posted three aces.
The Captains hit .207 for the match and limited Southern Virginia to a .079 output while CNU led 8-4 in blocks.
Christopher Newport will compete at Mary Washington on Saturday at 2 p.m.
