SALISBURY, Md. -- The 21st-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team is headed on the road for three straight games starting Saturday as they travel to Salisbury University (6-5-1, 1-3-0) for Capital Athletic Conference action. Wrapping up the first round of action in the double round robin conference schedule this season, the Captains (7-1-3, 4-0-0) will put it's six-game unbeaten streak on the line at 2:00 pm.
This season, the Captains are 2-0-1 in road games as they head away from Captains Field for just the second time in a seven-game stretch. Salisbury is in the midst of a three-game slide but all five of their losses this season have come by just a single goal including a 1-0 setback at York (Pa.) on Wednesday night.
Kicking off a three-game homestand, the Sea Gulls will provide live stats and live video of the action starting at 2:00 pm. Links can be found on the men's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
The series against Salisbury favors the Sea Gulls as Christopher Newport is 13-19-5 all-time against the rival on the Eastern Shore. Justin Piercy has been terrific in his first year between the pipes, stopping 43 shots on-goal for an 84.3% save percentage. He has played all but 34 minutes in the goal this season for Christopher Newport and has logged three solo shutouts.
Playing in front of him, the Captains defense has been led by senior
Derek Cook who has made 46 consecutive starts as he has anchored the back line since his sophomore year. Cook also ranks second on the team in scoring this season with 11 points on 3 goals and a team-high 5 assists.
Daniel Hulett and
Davis Pillow have also started all 11 games this season on defense while senior
Khari Jones and rookie
Jacob Dudley round out the stingy back four.
Offensively, sophomore
Lincoln Kickbush and junior
Justin Wilson have led the charge with nine goals and three assists combined. Kickbush has a team-high five goals and 12 points while Wilson has picked up a pair of game-winning goals as he has peppered opposing goalkeepers with a .607 SOG%.
Salisbury has been led by a pair of juniors in Dolph Hegewisch and Josh Woozley. Hegwisch has four goals and five assists for a team-high 13 points while Woozley also has four goals so far this season. In goal, a trio of freshmen have split time this season with Ryan Miller doing the yeoman's work with eight starts and 10 games played. Miller has a 1.16 goals against average and a .762 save percentage.
Following the road trip to Salisbury, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will travel to face St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, October 16 to wrap up the home-and-home series with the Seahawks. The Captains defeated St. Mary's, 3-1, in the first matchup on Wednesday night.
