NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Taking on future conference rival Johnson & Wales University  Charlotte for the first time in program history on Thursday night, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team captured a 2-1 win to extend a four-match unbeaten streak. Senior Drew McWhinney scored a brace to lead CNU to the win and the Captains improved to 10-2-2 overall on the season.

On January 15, 2025, the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference announced that JWU Charlotte was accepted to become a member of the league while beginning competition in 2025-26. It was the first matchup for the Captains against the Wildcats and McWhinney assured fans it was memorable with a goal in each half for his third career two-goal performance. With the loss, Johnson & Wales slipped to 3-7-4 overall this season.

Christopher Newport has now won 10 or more games in six of the first seven seasons under head coach Justin Chezem and 28 of the last 30 years in program history dating back to 1996.

The Captains dominated the contest offensively with a 19-4 advantage in total shots including a 12-3 edge in shots on-goal. McWhinney's six attempts from the field led the way while Joshn Monzon also added four shots including a pair of on-target swings.

Both goals came on a pair of exceptional combination passes as the Captains' offense fired on all cylinders. First, McWhinney scored on a header as he cut in front of the goalkeeper in the 10th minute of action. The tally was set up by Declan Karney out of the back line, playing a gorgeous long ball over the top and into the corner for Monzon. With no one to beat, Monzon raced to the free ball and crossed it into the middle for McWhinney on the near post.

The second score doubled the lead and came in the 66th minute of action. On a restart out of bounds, junior defender Carson Friedlein unloaded a long toss into the box where Tim McGuire was ready to head the ball down to the feet of McWhinney open in the middle of the box. The senior wasted no time and buried another shot into the left side of the goal. With the score, McWhinney reached 50 career points with his 22nd career goal winding up as his eighth career gamewinner.

Just under ten minutes of game time later, the Wildcats got on the board to cut the lead back to one, 2-1. With renewed vigor, the Captains outshot the visitors in the final 15 minutes by a count of 5-1 including four attempts on frame.

Sophomore Caleb Johnson earned his second career win by playing just under 71 minutes between the pipes and leaving the game with a 2-0 lead while making one save. Henry Houser played the final 19+ and surrendered one goal on top of his one stop. Rookies Mason Robotham and Brayden Moyssiadis did the lion's share of the work on the back line alongside Declan Karney and Ben Sullivan.

The Captains will next travel to No. 24 Salisbury University on Tuesday, October 26 for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday but will now be played a day earlier in Maryland.
