FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team will hit the road for a 6:00 p.m. matchup on Tuesday night as the Captains (9-2-1) will travel to Methodist University (9-1-4). The game will be played at Duggins Soccer Stadium on the campus of Methodist University.
Live stats will be available alongside a live video webcast ($) with links found on the men's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
The Captains are coming off a 1-0 neutral site victory against Dickinson College last week that gave Christopher Newport four wins over the last five games. CNU is now 9-2-1 overall after Saturday's contest against Mary Washington was postponed due to poor weather.
Christopher Newport is facing Methodist for the first time since 2021 and owns a 31-15-2 advantage in the all-time series. CNU has won three in a row against the Monarchs and is also on a ten-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1). The teams competed as conference rivals for decades as members of the USA South Athletic Conference before the Captains' exit in the 2013-14 season. The record in Fayetteville favors CNU slightly, 12-7-1.
The Captains defense leads the way this season with just 11 goals surrendered in 11 games played for a 1.00 GAA. Senior goalkeeper
Matt Yates has started all 11 games and picked up his first career solo shutout against Dickinson. The back line in front of him has been led by juniors
Declan Karney,
Carson Friedlein, and
Jackson Carlyon with
Ben Sullivan and
Yazan Yaghmmour playing integral roles.
On the offensive end, senior
Riley Usher continues to lead the offense with 15 points (6g, 3a) while classmates
Drew McWhinney, with 9,
Michael Hackworth and
Yazan Yaghmmour, with 8, have helped lift CNU to one of its best seasons under head coach
Justin Chezem. CNU has featured seven different game-winning goal scorers this season with McWhinney's two leading the chart.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Thursday, October 22 when they play host to Johnson & Wales (N.C.) for the final schedule home game of the year at 6:00 p.m.
