Christopher Newport Travels to Mary Washington for Doubleheader Saturday Afternoon

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport basketball teams hit the road for the first time in conference play on Saturday, traveling to the University of Mary Washington for a doubleheader set to begin at 1:00 pm.

Both teams opened conference play with wins against York (Pa.) on Wednesday evening and will look to continue their winning ways against the Eagles. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for both games at CNUsports.com.

In the first matchup, the CNU women, entering the game with a 10-2 overall mark and 1-0 record in league play, will face Mary Washington coming off a loss at Frostburg State. The Eagles are 6-6, 0-1 heading into the bout against Christopher Newport. Following the women's tilt, the CNU men will put a five-game win streak on the line with an 11-1, 1-0 overall mark, taking on a Mary Washington squad that is 8-4, 0-1.

Christopher Newport senior Jessica Daguilh is coming off a career-best 27-point performance in the CAC opener and is currently leading the team in rebounding and ranks second in scoring. Fellow senior Madison Howdyshell is the only other Captain to have started all 12 games and leads the squad in minutes per game. CNU has won four of the last five while leaning on a potent offense that is pouring in 79.3 points per game.

The UMW women are led by Jordan Pamlanye with 12.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Sophomore Maddie Shifflett and junior Emily Thompson have combined for nearly 3.5 three-pointers per game while adding over 11 points per game apiece.

The all-time series favors the Captains, 30-20, with three straight wins over the Eagles.

On the men's side, the Captains are ranked No. 18 in the D3hoops.com national rankings after opening the season 8-1. CNU has extended that start to an 11-1 overall record heading into Saturday's conference bout. Marcus Carter leads the team with 17.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, while also pacing the team in blocked shots and ranking third in assists. Sophomore Jason Aigner is among the league leaders in three-point shooting, averaging nearly three made triples per contest while ranking second on the team in scoring with 13.0 points per game.

The Mary Washington roster earned a mid-season boost with the return of sophomore shooting guard Drew Johnson, who has played in the last three games. The sharp-shooting guard scored 17 in his debut in a win over John Carroll and added 10 in the Eagles loss to Frostburg State on Wednesday night. Rookie forward Greg Rowson leads the team with 15.9 points per game while senior Johnny Cronin has added 13.6 points per contest so far this season.

CNU has won nine straight against the Eagles, improving to 28-6 all-time against the conference foe.

Following Saturday's twin bill, the Captains will return home to host St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday, January 9. Tipoff at the Freeman Center will be at 5:30 and 7:30 pm.
