RICHMOND, Va. -- Christopher Newport junior guard
Toa Hollenbeck was named a first team All-State selection by the Virginia Sports Information Directors on Thursday to extend a streak of 21 straight years with at least one Captain earning the honor.
Hollenbeck picks up All-State recognition for the second time in his career after also garnering second team plaudits as a freshman. This year, he helped lift the nationally-ranked Captains to the Final Four and earned first team All-State honors.Â
The Chesapeake, Va. native earned second team All-Region honors from D3hoops.com and a second team All-District pick from the NABC. He earned first team All-Conference honors for the third year in a row after leading the Captains in scoring with 18.9 points per game. He was a four-time C2C Player of the Week and became the 35th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.Â
During the season, Hollenbeck registered a career-high 43 points in a victory over eventual national champion Mary Washington on February 4, marking the third-highest scoring output by a player in program history. He played in all 31 games with 17 starts and also posted a historic effort from the free-throw line by knocking down 85 percent (159-187) of his attempts from the charity stripe. He ranked 11th nationally in free throws made and tied for the third most makes at the line in CNU lore.Â
His 587 points during his third year ranks as the eighth-highest single season total in CNU history after leading the squad in three-point shooting with 62 makes from beyond the arc. Hollenbeck added 86 rebounds (2.8 rpg), 55 assists, and 18 steals.Â
Hollenbeck and the Captains finished the year ranked No. 4 nationally with a 25-6 overall record. CNU reached the NCAA Tournament for the 29th time and 10th straight season, marking the longest active sreak in the nation.Â
