FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After their first year as a program, the Christopher Newport women's golf team dominated the first ever Capital Athletic Conference All-Conference awards, announced by the league on Thursday morning.
Erica Whitehouse, who ran away with the individual medalist honors at the CAC Championship, was named the league's Rookie and Player of the Year, while
Jamie Coleman collected Coach of the Year honors. Additionally, all five CNU starters at the CAC Championship earned first team All-Conference honors.
The Captains won the 2018 CAC Women's Golf Championship by 141 strokes over second place York, as the five CNU golfers all finished in the top six.Â
Whitehouse became just the fifth student-athlete in CNU Athletics history to win Rookie and Player of the Year honors in the same season. She joins John Kokoruda (Men's Golf - 1976), Chelsie Schweers (Women's Basketball - 2007-08), Sabrina Hill (Softball - 2012), and
Briana Sutton (Volleyball - 2013). The Captains' leader won the individual championship with a 220 (73-73-74) in a dominating performance. The Mechanicsville, Va. native led the event in Par 3, Par 4, and Par 5 scoring, while also leading the field in birdies.Â
She won the individual title by 26 strokes in the finest performance of her young career. In 16.5 rounds of play this season, Whitehouse finished the regular season with a 77.8 stroke average and four top five finishes in eight events played. She ranks 17th nationally in scoring average and second among first-year players. She ranks 8th nationally in Par 4 scoring (4.31) and tied for eighth in total birdies scored (41).Â
CNU was nearly perfect as a team, placing all five starters in the top six finishers. Behind Whitehouse was runner-up
Cameron Cook (+30), third-place
Katie Thome (+35), fifth place
Abbey Forde (+63), and sixth-place finisher
Harper Lurie (+65).Â
Thome finished second on the team in scoring average this season, with an 82.5, while Cook was third at 86.8. The duo each posted a pair of top five finishes to help lead the strong first-year program. Lurie and Forde played in seven of a possible eight events this season, including all four spring tournaments.Â
Head coach
Jamie Coleman earned his first career Women's Golf Coach of the Year honor after guiding the first-year program to the conference title. Quickly, the Captains have become relevant on a national level and currently rank 52nd in the Golfstat Relative Rankings, placing the young CNU squad in the top third of Division III women's golf.Â
York's Emma Harding joined the CNU quintet. The Spartans also had four second team All-Conference selections while Southern Virginia picked up two All-CACÂ honorees.Â
