NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Captains of Christopher Newport wrap up the regular-season schedule with two Capital Athletic Conference doubleheaders. Friday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m., the 11th-ranked CNU squad will host the Knights of Southern Virginia. Then on Saturday, Christopher Newport takes on Frostburg State with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. Prior to Saturday's start, the Captains will honor five senior student-athletes on Senior Day.
Keith Parr's team is 26-6 overall and 9-1 atop the CAC. The Captains are coming off a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday at Mary Washington. The triumph in game two of the twin bill gave Parr his 500th career victory, thus becoming the 56th coach in NCAA Division III softball history to reach the lofty plateau.
Southern Virginia enters the Friday games with an overall record of 14-19 and the Knights are 3-7 in CAC action. The Captains hold a 13-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Knights, including two wins last year in Buena Vista by scores of 17-0 and 12-0.
Frostburg State plays a Friday doubleheader at Mary Washington before coming to Captains Park for Saturday's battles. The Bobcats are 16-12 overall and 3-5 in league play. CNU is 14-2 all-time vs FSU, and last season in Frostburg, Md., the Captains recorded 7-5 and 4-0 victories. The teams also met at Captains Field in the CAC Tournament, with Christopher Newport posting a 3-2 win.
Following the back-to-back doubleheaders, CNU will begin preparing for the 2018 CAC Tournament. The league has gone to new format this season that will feature the top six finishers in the eight-team conference standings. The top two seeds will host three-team pods next Friday and Saturday, April 27th and 28th. The top seed will host the fourth and sixth seeds, while the second seed hosts the third and fifth-seeded schools. The double-elimination weekend winners will advance to play at the highest remaining seed in another double-elimination round the following weekend, May 4th and 5th, to determine the league champion.
