NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After sweeping doubles play against Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon, the Captains would get the clinching points from seniors
David Reed and
Justin Cerny in singles play in an 8-1 victory over the Sea Gulls on Senior Day. Nationally-ranked CNU improves to 11-8, 5-1 overall this season following the victory.
Reed and Cerny made sure their final home regular season match at the Eyre Courts was memorable as they paired together for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and then each won their matches on the top two singles lines in straight sets to clinch the team win. Reed downed Colt Williamson (6-2, 6-4) at No. 1 singles and Cerny defeated Ian Siew (6-1, 6-3) at No. 2.
In the other two doubles bouts, CNU would win by the same score of 8-6 as the teams battled closely in pairs play.
William Trang and
Andy Mason won at No. 2 and
Nicholas Ruzicka and
Dominic Lacombe managed the win at No. 3.
In singles play, Mason (No. 3), Ruzicka (No. 4), and Lacombe (No. 5) each picked up wins after the clinching points from the senior class. All three matches were tight as Mason needed a second set tiebreaker to defeat Stefan Hein (6-3, 7-6 (4)); Ruzicka lost the second set before bouncing back against Patrick MacLean (6-0, 4-6, 6-3); and Lacombe needed a breaker in the first to beat Kelson Weber (7-6 (4), 6-4).
The Captains will return to action on Sunday, wrapping up conference play against St. Mary's College of Maryland.
