Cerny Climbs Career Wins Charts in 9-0 Win against St. Mary's College of Maryland

Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport wrapped up the regular season as the No. 2 seed in the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference Championship and senior Justin Cerny highlighted the 9-0 win over St. Mary's College of Maryland with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles. With the wins, Cerny moved into a tie for second all-time in career doubles victories, with 62, and also tied Hugh Spain for eighth on the all-time singles wins list, with 55. 

Taking on their final league foe of the season on neutral courts in Fredericksburg, Va., the 36th-ranked Captains made quick work of the Seahawks (5-9, 2-5) while improving to 12-8 overall and 6-1 in league play. CNU will host the #3-seed, either  Salisbury University or Southern Virginia, on Wednesday, May 2 with match time to be determined. 

The Captains worked quickly through doubles with Cerny picking up his historci 62nd victory with rookie James Baron for the first time this season. The duo won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles as Cerny matched Eddie Glidewell for second all-time, trailing only Eric Shulman in Captains lore. 

In the No. 2 doubles bout William Trang and Andy Mason downed Ron Stith and Connor McKissick, 8-2. Nicholas Ruzicka and Dominic Lacombe shut out their foes, Cooper Clark and Kyle Van Winter, at No. 3, 8-0. Ruzicka and Lacombe are now 8-3 at No. 3 doubles this season. 

In singles play, Cerny won at No.  1, defeating Jon Gorel 6-0, 6-1, to earn his 55th career victory. Mason fought off Ethan Garren at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2 and Lacombe surrendered five games at No. 4 before downing McKissick 6-1, 6-4. The other three matches were won handily, as Ruzicka earned a clean 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3 over Ron Stith, Mitch Brody handled Van Winter 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Baron won at No. 6 over Clark, 6-1, 6-0. 

The Captains have just one regular season match left on the schedule as they will take on Washington & Lee, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South, on April 29 at 1:00 pm.
