YORK, Pa. - Christopher Newport suffered its first conference loss of the season on Friday at York College, but bounced back to take the nightcap over the Spartans. CNU, ranked fourth in the nation, squandered a 7-0 lead in the opener and fell, 8-7, before claiming the nightcap, 8-1, in five innings.
The Captains are now 22-6 overall and 5-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference. York is now 19-10-1 and 5-3 in conference play. The Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader started 90 minutes late Friday afternoon and the second game was called after five innings due to darkness. The delay was caused by a damaged pipe under the outfield that caused flooding in center field.
The Captains held a 7-0 advantage in the opener before the Spartans plated three runs in the fourth inning and then added five more in the fifth to pull out the 8-7 triumph. In the nightcap, CNU enjoyed a four-run fourth inning and posted 15 hits to open the 8-1 lead before the action was halted by darkness.

Leah Andrews led the way for CNU at the plate, driving in seven runs including five in the second game. Andrews recorded a double and triple in each game, and ended up four-for-five Sophomore first baseman
Liz Andrews had six hits in eight trips to the plate...a perfect four-for-four performance in the second game after going two-for-four in the opener. The Captains registered a total of 26 hits in the twin bill to go with their 15 total runs

Aubrey Bates earned the victory in game two to improve to 10-1 on the season. Bates threw all five innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits. Sophomore
Laura Kate Moss entered the opener in relief of starter
Patty Maye Ohanian and suffered the loss in game one to fall to 4-4 on the year. The Captains now own a 12-3 lead in the all-time series with the Spartans following the split.
CNU continues its road trip to the Keystone State on Saturday when the Captains take on the Lions of Penn State-Harrisburg. The CAC doubleheader in Middletown, Pa., is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
