NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport softball has a busy stretch coming up to conclude the regular season, and the Captains begin that stretch with back-to-back doubleheaders in the Keystone State. CNU, 21-5 overall and 4-0 atop the Capital Athletic Conference, will play five CAC doubleheaders in the next eight days beginning Friday afternoon at York College (Pa.).
The Captains had a 12-game winning streak snapped Wednesday with two home losses to top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan at Captains Park. The Marlins took the opener in six innings, 11-1, and then pulled out the nightcap with a 5-4 victory.
CNU and York will play Friday beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Spartans are 18-9-1 overall and 4-2 in CAC play so far this season. The Captains hold an 11-2 lead in the all-time series with the Spartans, and CNU won both ends of a twin bill last year at Captains Park by scores of 9-6 and 8-7.
Saturday, Christopher Newport will take on Penn State-Harrisburg in Middletown, Pa. The CAC doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Lions are 9-7 overall and 2-2 in league action heading into the weekend. CNU has won all eight previous meetings in the series with the Lions, and won last year at Captains Park, 11-3 and 10-2.
Following the weekend trip to Pennsylvania,
Keith Parr's fourth-ranked squad will head to Fredericksburg for a CAC doubleheader at Mary Washington next Wednesday. The Captains close out the regular season with Friday and Saturday doubleheaders next week at Captains Park against Southern Virginia and Frostburg State.
