NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport puts its 12-game winning streak on the line Wednesday, as the fourth-ranked Captains entertain the top-ranked and undefeated Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan University. The non-conference doubleheader is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. at Captains Park.
The Captains, 21-3 on the season, are 12-2 at home and are putting up big numbers. CNU has out-scored its opponents, 101-13, over the 12-game winning streak that dates back to March 18.
Keith Parr's squad is currently third in the country in slugging percentage and also third in home runs per game.Â
CNU freshman
Patty Maye Ohanian was selected the Player of the Week this week in the Capital Athletic Conference after going seven-for-13 at the plate last week with five runs batted in and three doubles in doubleheader sweeps over Salisbury and William Peace. Ohanian also earned a victory after pitching in relief in the second game of last Wednesday's twin bill with Salisbury. Ohanian tops the CNU squad this season in runs batted in (33) and base hits (34).
Sophomore pitcher
Aubrey Bates earned her second CAC Pitcher of the Week honor this week after winning both of her starts last week. Bates is now 9-0 on the season, and struck out 13 batters in 12 innings of work in her two complete game efforts last week. Bates has struck out 50 batters this season in 60 innings of work.
Freshman catcher
Emerald Cheesbrew leads the Captains in home runs with seven, and is second in the country in slugging percentage with a 1.195 mark. Christopher Newport has clubbed 28 home runs in 24 games so far this season.
The Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan enter play on Wednesday with a 28-0 record and are the top team in the national rankings. VWU won the National Championship in Division III last year, ending the season with a 54-3 final record. The last time the Marlins lost a regular-season game was at Captains Park last season on March 12th. CNU defeated the Marlins, 4-3 in eight innings, in the first game of a doubleheader split. The Marlins hold a 41-35 advantage in the all-time series.
The games will be the final non-conference battles of the season for the Captains, who still have five CAC doubleheaders remaining on the schedule before the conference tournament. Both games of the doubleheader Wednesday will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/live. Live stats will also be available for both games.
