NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Continuing to face top notch competition in out of conference play this spring, the 28th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match against No. 15 Case Western Reserve on Sunday afternoon, 6-3. The bout would come down to the final two singles matches before being decided in the nationally-ranked battle.

The Captains raced out to a 2-1 lead after doubles, and senior David Reed earned a straight set win on the top line to keep CNU tight with the Spartans, but the Top 15 visiting squad pulled away in singles for the win.

CNU falls to 3-3 with the setback while Case Western Reserve improves to 4-4 on the year.

Reed earned a pair of wins on the day, capturing an 8-4 victory with teammate Justin Cerny at No. 1 doubles before moving into singles for a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 in the individual matchups. With Cerny, Reed dropped James Fojtasek and Matthew Chen for CNU's first point. In singles, Reed also battled Fojtasek and came away with his third dual win of the season.

CNU also got a win at No. 3 doubles where Dominic Lacombe and Nicholas Ruzicka earned an 8-6 win over Jonathan Powell and Neil Mabee.

In singles action, the last two bouts were up for grabs when Case Western took a 4-3 lead in the match. Chen was playing Cerny at number two, where the Captains' senior forced a third set; Lacombe also forced a third against Rob Stroup at No. 4. Lacombe suffered a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 loss and Cerny was edged by Chen 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.

The Captains will now prepare for their annual spring break trip to California, starting with a match against No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on March 4.
